I was assigned into the rotoform, form family for the workshop this past week. Rotoform meant working on the lathe, which I was very excited about. Last sunday I brought in my wood to process and glue up. Tuesday night I turned my first piece, I didn’t plan it or draw a guide, I just dove in. Then on Wednesday during the rotoforms meeting with Joe, I learned that this was probably the worst choice I could have made. He told me to draw out a design, think about where the cut would go and then to start on the lathe from there. On Wednesday night, I started sketching curves, and ideas for what my second turned object would look like. The result was pretty good, to make my focal point, I created a v shaped ridge in my piece on the lathe, then I sliced through the ridge, and lined up the bottom of the v with the top. This offset both pieces and created a slight contrast to draw attention. My piece is not crafted as well as I would have liked, but only having minimal experience on the lathe, it was difficult to execute my piece to the level I was hoping for. The idea of rotoform does imply movement, my piece has a rhythm to it.
