Vocabulary Database (theme food)

1.  Tenuous/tension/tense:  an item that has force, friction, or involved.

Cinnamon Sticks:  The manner that the two edges curl up into one form, creates a very tense feeling.

2.  Stretched:  Something that has elastic qualities, and can expand, or expand and contract back to its original form.

Grilled Cheese:  In-between the bread rests ooey gooey melted cheese that stretches when pulled apart.  In the action shot below one can see the cheese mid stretch as the sandwich is being pulled apart to eat.

3.  Melodic: a pleasant pattern, that is produced and repeated.

Peppermint Sticks:  The red striped pattern that winds around the candy stick is very melodic, it follows a pattern.

4.  Rugged: To have an uneven surface made out of different components.  Boots or tool grips are often marketed as rugged due to there heavy duty materials, and thick grips with deep ridges that mimic an uneven surface.

Bacon is an amazing combination of meat and fat the marbleized surfaces appears rugged from the different textures, and lines.  The two components are fused into one piece of food.

5.  Durable:  Something that is tough and can be transported from places to place without falling apart or getting ruined, it can also withstand tough use.

Chicken Salad Sandwich:  The outside bread of this sandwich is a hard roll, which can be tossed around a little and still be in good usable condition (still tastes great).  The chicken salad is already chopped up into small pieces and had mayo which essentially glues the sandwich together.  The combination of the bread and salad creates one durable sandwich.

6.  Reliable:  Something that is very consistent and can be trusted, in most cases the more basic it is the more reliable it will be.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich:  This is basic tried and true, it can be counted on for many meals for young kids, with only three ingredients and no cook time it is very reliable.

7.  Honest:  Something that is true to what it is labeled.

Sugar: A one ingredient ingredient, very simple and found in many foods, there is nothing deceiving.

8.  Friendly:  Something that is kind and welcoming, gathers people together.

Pie: Starts off as a whole and then is divided into slices, for families or people to share,  an iconic hostess gift this item brings good feelings and gathers people together.

9.  Voluminous:  Light and airy, but takes up a lot of space, especially something that expands from a small container like whipped creme or popcorn.  Creates the illusion of taking up space.

Whipped Creme comes from a small container then expands into a stream, this light topping takes up a big space making it a voluminous food.

10.  Light/lightness:  an object with a low density,  something that has a low amount of weight in proportion to its volume.  The object looks light and friendly, takes almost no amount of energy to pick it up, and when dropped it almost floats back down.

Popcorn is very light when unpopped in a bag, the small envelope does have a solid feel and weight to it, but once it is heated and popped up the bag feels light and weightless.

11.  Geometric:  consists of a rectilinear pattern of straight lines

Waffle a toaster waffle has a geometric pattern molded into the unit.  The square holes that the geometric pattern make are great to hold syrup or butter.

12.  Sour:  Something that is shocking, it can be in a good or bad way or neither.  Very distinctive, a small amount can drastically change the outcome of either idea or project.  Lemon is not only sour in its flavor but the color of the outside skin is very bright and can be shocking.

13.  Classic:  Something that is iconic and has built up its following over a long time, many people believe in this product.

Fries:  A simple, American staple these are instantly recognizable.

14.  Swift  Something that happens quickly and easily.

Minute Rice the action of cooking this is very quickly compared to others of the same variety.

15.  Sharp: an object that can be pointy or have a razor sharp side.   A sharp object is something that does not look welcoming to pick up anyway, most sharp objects have a handle or special use of intent so the user is not harmed.

Rosemary is sharp in one direction, if one was to hold the branch and glide there hand up from the root to the tip it would be fine, but to go from the tip to the root would be painful because of all the pointy stems.

16.  Crisp: an object with sharp lines or edges, they defy where the object starts and ends.

Bacon is crisp because of the lines of meat and fat running through it, it also has a thickness to it, which lets the user know where to pick it up eaisly.

17.  Clean:  Basic and pure, free from irregularities or dirt.

Pretzel Sticks:  All follow the same basic pattern and are very close to the same size, only with very minor irregularities.  Composed of only a few simple ingredents they are clean on the inside and outside.

18.  Subtle:  Delicate and precise, at times it can be hard to know its true meaning or use.

Vanilla: a refined liquid ingredient that can be added to almost anything, it can drastically improve or have the opposite effect on a recipe.

19.  Rectilinear:   An object or composition that is made only out of straight lines.  To make a composition the objects can be joined together in one or all of three ways, joining, piercing, or cradling.

Uncooked Linguine:  Starting off with a rectangular box the pasta can be taken out of, the shape of the pasta is also a rectangle but the proportions are much more harsh.

20.  Portly:  The middle of the object is significantly more rounded then the rest of the object.

Potato:  all-around this object has a round oval shape, but the bottom third has a bigger waist size then the rest of the object.

21.  Flamboyant:  a very bold combination of shape, color and texture.

Pineapple:  Combines two different shades of green and yellow, and two main textures to have a very bold, colorful, and strong combination of shape, color and texture.

22.  Excessive:  A huge amount, too much and over the top at the same time a few steps above what is necessary.

Thanksgiving Table:  There is so much food it can all barley fit on the table along with the people eating it and the plates, there are not only too many different food options but an overload of every choice.

23.  Reserved:  Rare and special, can be very expensive or hard to find not a common object or occurrence.

Caviar: Are small fish eggs that have a lavish color and texture,  this is a very lavish food and served in small quantities.

24.  Constrained:  Something with a limited number of uses.

Sardines:  Due to there uniquely oily/greasy texture they can only be paired with a limited number of foods.

25.  Pragmatic:  an object that is designed to deal with specific situations in a realistic and sensible way, it is easy for the viewer to understand what its use is.

Cereal:  Is designed to be a quick efficient breakfast, with no cook time.  As many different variations there are, they all follow the same formula  because it works a thin cardboard box and inside contains a plastic bag filled with hundreds of small Cereal pieces to be poured into a bowl.

26.  Melancholy:  relating to sad emotions.

Last bite of Sandwich:  This started off as an amazingly designed Bacon, Egg, and Cheese sandwich seasoned to perfection with Salt, Pepper, and Ketchup.  The last bite is sad, and lonely looking, not only has the rest of it already been eaten, but this is the last scrap of bread with hardly any Bacon, Egg, or Cheese left on it.

27.  Bulbous:  an object which is rounded or bulging, simmilar shape to a garden bulb

Onion:  is extremely rounded, but with the top it also connects to the idea of a flower bulb.

28.  Strong:  The way something is built, designed, or created to be durable, and withstand rough situations, or to protect something of value.

Egg Shells:  Are dainty but durable,  they are able to keep the egg white and yolk fresh and sealed, until ready to use.

29.  Weak:  an object that is easily breakable, does not hold up to all situations.

Puff Pastry:  Is very delicate and flaky, it can not withstand much force, or it can tear or break.

30.  Faceted : A single side of an object that has multiple sides.

Salt: Salt has many different sides, similar to the way a diamond is cut, although it is very hard to capture this on the camara.

31.  Dense:  An item that is very heavy and rich the ingredients are all tightly packed

Slutty Brownies:  are made by brownie batter on the bottom, cookie dough on top, and Oreos stuck in.  The bottom layer is dense as you can see it compared to the cookie part, the ingredients are very tightly packed into together, as where the cookie part looks more grainy.

32.  Utilitarian:  designed with a practical use in mind over aesthetics.

Granola Bar:  is designed for convenience, and therefor does not look as appealing as it if functional

33.  Structured: how items are arranged to create something more complex.

Egg: an egg is so simple, yet so important and amazing, the egg shell is strong enough to keep the wet slimy egg, contained and fresh.  Then the egg white contains and protects the golden yellow yolk from breaking, or separating.   The color change also helps viewers to understand the structure.

34.  Amorphous:  Does not have a clear shape

Mashed Patatos:  Are served in a heap and the shape they take on ones plate, is directly related to how much force they were flung out of the serving spoon with.  The shape has no clear lines or boundaries, and one would not be able to relate this shape with any other known shape.

35.  Closed: Consisting of two parts that are shut together by some sort of hinge, joint, or mechanism.

Mixed Nuts:  These different nuts are all enclosed in hard strong shells.  To be opened a nutcracker is needed.

36.  Heavy:  a food that not only has a heavy weight, but is also very rich or dense that one only needs a small amount to feel satisfied from it.

Egg Nog:  When poured from the container into a cup the heaviness is visible, the drink is also very rich and creamy.

37.  Organic:  All natural, something that is not produced in a factory or a complex mix of chemicals.

Honey:  All natural, occurring from bees, there are no preservatives, and it takes on an organic shape when squeezed out of the container.

38.  Open:  Something that can be closed, but is at least partway opened.

Pistachios:  A nut inside two halves of a shell that needs to be cracked open to be able to enjoy.  The shell is open because it is containing the nut as soon as it is wide enough for the nut to come out the shell is completely open.

39.  Grounded:  Reasonable, well balanced and simple.

Ground Pepper: Yes it has ground in the name, but this is a very simple spice that complements almost anything, its taste composition is both balanced and simple. Pepper is a common, cheap spice that is used frequently.

40.  Superficial:  The appearance on the outermost part of an object, the surface

Piece of fruit with bruses

Carrots:  The outside skin of the carrots, have small dents, and areas or dirt, Once the carrots are peeled and rinsed, they look clean and edible.

ADDATIONAL FOOD

41. Fluffy:  Something that is pillowy and puffed up it is very light and can easily be condensed down to a smaller size.

Marshmallows: Are soft and pillowly, these can be pinched then pop right back into its original form, so they also have an elastic quality.

42. Repetitive:  Follows a pattern, or process.

Oatmeal:  hundreds of small oats that are all the same, they follow a pattern.

43.  Silky:  resembles silk material, it is soft, fine, shiny and looks luxurious.

Chocolate Syrup:  First the way it pours out of the container it looks very silky, then once it is on a surface, it shares qualties of silk by looking rich and shiny.

44. Simple:  Something that the viewer understands right away

Bread:  Is easily understood by everyone, and served at almost every restaurant, its form is easily understood with only the crust, and inside.

45. Cheerful: Something that brings joy and lifts peoples spirits higher.

Candy:  Sweet peppermints, are a classic candy, the red and white pattern is very cheerful.

46. Wiggly: an object who’s loose form can sway from side to side, in short movements.

Jello: is a very unique material, it is rigid enough to stand up on its own, but the slightest movement to the surface it is on the whole unit starts to move from side to side, without ruining its original form.

47. Loose:  Something that is barley being contained to whatever it is consealed in or attatched too.

Tea bag:  Loose tea is one thing but this loose relationship is between the tea inside the teabag and more spicifically the material of the teabag.  It is loose enough that when submerged in water the flavor of the tea can seep thorugh without the particles falling out.

48.  Grooved: Long deep lines indented into something, similar to wrinkles.

Crasins: the texture on the outside of these is indented and shriveled, they have a groved texture.

49. Conforting:  reliable, something that can help someone feel better.

Chocolate: is an iconic go to food, when someone is sad or needs to be conforted about a bad situation.

50.  Refreshing:  invigorating, gives one a second wind of energy.

Grapes:  A juicy and crunchy, healthy snack.

    The grilled cheese has sold me. You can do food. Be sure that your definitions are responding to the qualities of the design and not just to physical characteristics. Think about the definitions in terms of psychological impact a design can have on human interaction
